Wes Flanary - Bio
Born and raised in the southwestern Virginia mountains, I've always enjoyed the outdoors. I grew up surrounded by amazing landscapes and scenes that most people would only see in pictures; old barns sitting on rugged hills and plenty of tree covered mountains and deep valleys.
I've been drawing and painting since a I was a young child, something I took to naturally. But it wasn't until high school that a great teacher started focusing me on a path to pursue art. He got me involved in several scholastic art programs and competitions. I enjoyed it and, to my surprise, did very well. So I decided to see where it would take me after I graduated.
I attended the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale with the thoughts of being an illustrator. Once I graduated I returned to the mountains I called home. It was difficult to find steady work as an illustrator there. I decided graphic design seemed a better way to make a living. For a while I was focused on this creative field of work.
I would always come back to art from time to time, trying to do it on the side, but never successfully. I made a good career of working in design, eventually evolving into photography and video as the times changed, but it was not art. Now I'm back and I'm just getting started.
I'm currently based in Raleigh, NC but still travel back to the Appalachian mountains to reconnect and to find inspiration. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
